Mississippi State Fires Coach Zach Arnett After One Season

"Not Suited to be a Head Coach," Says AD Selmon

Bulldogs Searching for New Leader

Mississippi State University announced Monday that it has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one season. Arnett, who was promoted from defensive coordinator following the death of Mike Leach in December 2022, led the Bulldogs to a 4-6 record this season.

"After careful consideration, we have made the decision to relieve Zach Arnett of his duties as head football coach," said Mississippi State Athletic Director Zac Selmon. "While we appreciate Zach's dedication to our program, we do not believe that he is the right fit to lead our team moving forward."

Arnett's dismissal comes as no surprise to many observers. The Bulldogs struggled mightily under his leadership, particularly on offense. Mississippi State ranked near the bottom of the SEC in several offensive categories, including scoring (13th), total offense (14th), and passing offense (14th).

With Arnett's departure, Mississippi State now joins a growing list of schools looking for a new head football coach. The Bulldogs are expected to be among the most attractive coaching jobs on the market, given their recent success under Leach and the resources available in Starkville.

Several potential candidates have already been mentioned, including former Auburn coach Bryan Harsin, former Florida coach Dan Mullen, and current San Diego State coach Brady Hoke. However, Mississippi State is expected to take its time in making a decision, as they search for the right person to lead the Bulldogs back to prominence.
